Waste not want not

At a time when we are told that people cannot afford to eat or to eat healthy our supermarkets feel that it is ok to refuse to sell mountains of food a day. This not only means that there is perfectly good food that is being destroyed this also means that our farmers are struggling to make ends meat themselves. A large proportion of the food that supermarkets refuse to sell is because they consider the produce to be ‘ugly’. They are refusing to sell perfectly good food because it doesn’t meet their cosmetic standards, and the reason that they give is because the this is what the customer wants! I don’t know about you but I don’t remember the supermarkets ever asking me if what a carrot looks like will change my buying preference, I think that finding weird looking fruit and veg is the best part of going food shopping. Now we have the chance to say that we truly love food and hate waste. So please take few minuets to sign the wastenot pledge.

The war on waste doesn’t begin and end with the super markets we have to do our part too. As consumers we throw away a lot f produce, not just good food but things like wearable clothes too. This not only means more rubbish in land fill that doesn’t need to be there, we are wasting our own hard earned money. There are some fantastic tips on what we can do to make a difference. So before you put something in the bin please ask yourself if the bin is the right place for it. Can it be re-used, recycled or given to a charity.

In the UK our local councils have provided us with recycling right on our door steps but there are still lots of things that we can recycle that they don’t currently cater for. I have found a fantastic site that accepts many items that I certainly have never thought about recycling. So if you are as passionate about recycling as I am please have a look at http://www.terracycle.co.uk/en-UK/brigades.html and see how they can help you to make even more of a difference.

So remember to ‘love food and hate waste’, ‘support our farmers’ and to think re-use, recycle or donate before you throw something away.

Thank you for reading. I promise there are some crochet projects coming soon x

  1. I love this post. I keep hoping that they will start an ugly produce section in the markets here in the States. Fingers crossed. In my mind it should at least be donated. It just brakes my heart that all of it gets thrown out when so many families go hungry.

    1. I agree with you completely. I just don’t understand how they can justify destroying perfectly good food when there are so many people going hungry.

Here’s to ugly fruit making it’s way to a store near you soon x
